Fall 2018 – GRA Contract Job Description

The Education Coordinator at the Arrell Food Institute requires a qualified, highly motivated, graduate student currently enrolled at the University of Guelph (or graduated from Masters or PhD in past 12 months) to support its experiential-learning activities over the fall of 2018.

Project Context

Arrell Food Institute and Food from Thought run an experiential learning program for 20 Masters and PhD students studying food & agriculture across a variety of all disciplines at the University of Guelph: 16 as recipients of the Food from Thought Research Assistantship (RAship) and 4 as recipients of the Arrell Food Scholarship.

The program is designed to develop students’ potential as future leaders in the agriculture and food sectors. This unique program provides students the opportunity to collaborate with non-academic partners, and to work on contemporary challenges facing the sector.

These students, “the cohort,” are provided funding, networking opportunities, and bespoke training in various career-relevant skills. They also form small teams and work in partnership with an external partner on a project related to food security and/or agriculture. Having designed this program and seeing its success after its first year, the Arrell Food Institute is in need of an assistant to manage the administration of this program. The incumbent would take responsibility for all administrative aspects of the program.

Main responsibilities include:

-Event management

-Budget and finances

-Email, meeting, and telephone communication among cohort members, partner organizations, Food from Thought and Arrell Food Institute staff, and all campus colleagues

-Detailed record-keeping and feedback to inform future program design

The ideal candidate would have experience in transdisciplinary learning environments, experiential learning and/or community-engaged scholarship.

Working with the Arrell Food Institute and Food from Thought teams, and reporting to the Director of Operations for the Arrell Food Institute, they should exemplify the following qualities:

•Excellent communication

•Adaptable

•Initiative-taking/self-starting

• Professional manner/attitude

•Highly detailed/organized
