An Sakai
Arrell Scholar, Department of Geography, Environment and Geomatics
“We are facing a serious climate crisis worldwide and considering how the food system has impacted our globe is required. This is why it is crucial to take action to discover the sustainable design of vertical farming and educational opportunities for students to learn about issues and the potential of agri-tech as a resolution.”
An is joining the University of Guelph from her home in Osaka prefecture, Japan. Her Bachelor’s degree in International Studies focused on the opportunities and challenges of urban agriculture in Japan, and was completed at Doshisha Women’s College of Liberal Arts in Kyoto. She has also worked at E-Being, a non-profit that runs environmental events with the Osaka city government.
An will be joining the lab of Dr. Evan Fraser for her Masters degree, focusing on developing a sustainable design for vertical farming that uses green energy, and understanding how such a system could be used to support a national school food program. She feels passionate about the potential of the food system to contribute to a sustainable future, and is excited about supporting local food production and improving access to healthy food.
