Education at Arrell Food Institute

Why Is Education Important To Us?

The future of the agri-food workforce is changing. We are dealing with wicked challenges like climate change, disrupted supply chains, a growing world population, and increasing hunger across the globe. To meet these challenges, we need to train students who can think beyond disciplines and silos, communicate and implement complex ideas, and deal with new technologies and data to create innovative solutions.

That’s why Arrell Food Institute is redefining the way we train students in agri-food. Through innovative graduate courses, experiential learning and scholarships, we are bringing together students to develop in-demand skills, connect with industry leaders, and tackle complex problems. UNIV*6050: Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Agri-Food Systems

The graduate course UNIV*6050: Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Agri-Food Systems provides students with foundational lessons in communication, critical thinking and collaboration, and then matches teams of students with an industry, government or community partner. Students apply these skills by exploring the challenges faced by their partner organization and pitching and developing a solution.

Net-Zero Food Systems Challenge

The Net-Zero Food Systems Challenge (NZFSC), now entering its second year, is an experiential learning program that brings together graduate students with industry leaders to explore solutions to a net-zero food system. Students conduct independent research, synthesize information about policy and practice, and collate their information into a series of reports and recommendations.
