Claire Mercier

Claire Mercier will be completing her master’s in the School of Environmental Sciences under the supervision of Dr. Jackie Goordial. She has has a B.Sc in Microbiology and Immunology focusing on environmental microbiology. Claire previously also completed a French Baccalaureate in Science, specializing in Earth and Life Sciences in Lycée Notre-Dame de Chartres.  Her research focuses on how viruses that infect bacteria influence greenhouse gas emissions from thawing Arctic permafrost, a crucial part of global carbon storage. This research will help improve climate change predication models.

After completing the MSc program, she hopes to join a research team focusing on polar ecosystems, which are among the least understood on the planet yet the most affected by climate change. She aims to guide global decision-making for climate adaptation and mitigation through the deepening of our understanding of ongoing and upcoming climate change.
